Walking Towards Habitat III in Quito

This year marks a very distinct year for urban policy making. The Habitat III process, which started in 2014 will be concluded later this year during the Habitat III conference in Quito where the New Urban Agenda will be agreed upon by UN member states to set the policy framework for our urbanising world during the next two decades. Walk21 has been involved in this process since 2015 by providing feedback to policy documents and attending preparatory meetings within the Habitat III process. At this point we are happy to see the latest "Revised Zero Draft" for the New Urban Agenda including walking as a key element for sustainable urban transport systems. In paragraph 95 the document calls governments to "provide access for all to safe, affordable, sustainable urban mobility". One of three measure for achieving this is by "Supporting a significant increase in accessible public transport infrastructure as well as nonmotorized options such as walking and cycling" We have provided feedback on more constructive and supportive wording to this draft. Now the drafting process for the New Urban Agenda will continue during PrepCom 3 in Surabaya and conclude in Quito during the Habitat III conference to be held from 17-20 October 2016. Walk21 will be participating in the Habitat III conference in Quito and continue to advocate for, help implement and monitor a shift towards more walkable cities which will allow to meet many of the targets and goals put forward in the New Urban Agenda.
