  • Integrating Active Transportation & Health into Municipal and Regional Transportation Planning: Defining the Metrics and Identifying Best Practices
Presented by UBC’s Active Transportation Collaboratory, the City of Vancouver Transportation 2040, TransLink

Please join us in initiating a global dialogue on best practices for municipal and regional transportation planning to incorporate explicit metrics, policies, methods, and fiscal strategies to promote active transportation (i.e. walking, cycling, etc.) and make links to its measurable health benefits. We hope to educate planning and engineering practitioners on these techniques and to identify research needs to further support linking health benefits and active transportation investments. Key themes for the symposium include: (1) The Case for Action: Why should we consider health outcomes in the planning and design of neighbourhoods, transportation networks and public spaces? (2) The Connections: How can land use and urban design influence active transportation mode share and, therefore, health outcomes? How does transit service influence active transportation mode share and health outcomes? (3) The Metrics and Financial Benefits: What are the measurable health benefits of investing in active transportation and how can they best be quantified? How can we monetize health impacts of active transportation planning? (4) The Leadership: Who should be taking the lead on connecting health, land use and transportation benefits? What intergovernmental partnerships are required for this to be a success? Please register at: http://www.civicinfo.bc.ca/event/healthANDtransportpolicy.asp For more information, please contact Andrea Procyk, Project Coordinator, UBC Active Transportation Lab: andrea.procyk@ubc.ca
